His dream is to take over his aunt and uncle's abandoned dairy farm, where he can make cheese and live the life of his ancestors. The passage of time, and Pietro's voiceover, show the film's novelistic source material. It’s the spreading tale of a friendship that begins one mid-’80s summer, when city kid Pietro (played as a child by Lupo Barbiero) comes with his mother on vacation to Grana, a tiny fading hamlet nestled under the crushing, snow-capped immensity of the nearby Alps.

Although the room is no longer a kitchen, knowing it once was made me want to turn this into a “heart of the home” casual gathering space, just as our kitchens are today. So it’s a relief to report that Tóth, co-adapting with Klára Muhi a novel by Zsuzsa F. Várkonyi, handles this intermittent tension — both what’s interior and unarticulated, and what’s externally threatening — with an appreciative subtlety, and without a hint of soapiness. Tóth nods cautiously toward a dignified ambiguity, what can exist in the molecules between vulnerable souls in the process of rebuilding. Aldó, played by Károly Hajduk, is a wiry, disheveled figure with benevolent eyes and a haunted air, whose entire life is his ob-gyn practice since losing his family in the camps. When he meets angrily self-possessed 16-year-old patient Klára (Abigél Szőke), she’s coming out of a delayed puberty, still writing letters to parents whose absence she can explain away, and railing against life under her discipline-intensive, exasperated great-aunt Olgi (Mari Nagy). There’s an easy, flinty chemistry between Marinelli and Borghi, which is especially interesting given each is somewhat counterintuitively cast in a role for which the other might seem a more obvious choice.

As rescuers had broken into the house by making a hole in the roof, Pietro reasons that the house will therefore not last either because in some lives, there are mountains to which one cannot return, including the one at the center of it all. As he plays soccer with children at Asmi's school, he realizes that all that remains is to wander the eight mountains because on the highest mountain, he lost a friend. Returning to Grana, he informs Bruno of his plans to settle down in Nepal and probably will not be returning to Grana yearly; Bruno invites him to dinner.

Pietro hikes to a peak he and his father Giovanni reached decades ago and finds the summit book in which Giovanni had written on that occasion. In this and similar summit books on other mountain peaks he finds his father's experiences and feelings during hikes there with Pietro and Bruno and later with just Bruno. Later at dinner, Bruno and Lara argue over financial issues with her accusing him of having his head in the clouds. 15 years later, 31-year-old Pietro has found a job at a restaurant in Turin. One winter night, he receives a call from his mother that his father has died.

And so it means something when, years later, the fully grown Pietro makes it to that rocky summit, tired but triumphant, and breaks into an exuberant dance. It’s as if he’s finally mastered his environs, and perhaps even found a way to honor the father whose memory at once haunts and sustains him. Van Groeningen, meanwhile, grew up in a more “chaotic – but very loving” environment; the child of one-time hippie parents who later divorced. His father, Jo, went on to manage Ghent nightlife institution the Charlatan bar, paid homage to by the director as “your favourite place of perdition” in his 2016 film Belgica.

The spiritual dimension of Pietro and Bruno’s bond has its appeal, and one of the movie’s pleasures is that it takes male friendship seriously. There’s an expressly erotic dimension to the men’s love for each other, as can be the case with intimate relationships, though not an explicitly carnal one. They love and sustain each other, and it seems telling that neither forms a long-term romantic relationship until they’re adults. Perhaps, during one of the long summer evenings they spend together after Pietro returns to the area, one quietly reaches for the other under the cover of night. The filmmakers don’t say and neither does the novel, which each suggests that material concerns aren’t finally what troubles these two characters. Pietro, the restless, openhearted city boy who narrates “The Eight Mountains,” a tender story about love and friendship, is 11 years old when the movie begins.

When one of us said, “I believe in this,” then there’s something there that’s really valuable. We were happy, the producers were happy, and Felix suddenly proposed to direct the whole thing together. Have faith.” It was this big journey for us as a family, going to Italy with our son and making it a very shared experience, not [Felix] leaving us for a year and a half.

A mention of the Tibetan sky burial ritual echoes later on; twice, a life-and-death moment is relayed in the prosaic detail of hazard lights blinking on a car pulled in to the side of the road. Early in the process they met with Paolo Cognetti who lives six months out of the year in the Alps. “He showed us around a lot of the locations that serve as inspirations for this book,” he said, so in the end they shot the Italian portion of the film, which is also shot in Nepal, near to the writer’s Alpine abode. An epic journey of friendship and self-discovery set in the breathtaking Italian Alps, The Eight Mountains follows over four decades the profound, complex relationship between Pietro and Bru... Strangely, The Eight Mountains is the second film this year from Ghent-based directors, after Lukas Dhont’s Close, to feature a thicker-than-thieves young male friendship. “The resemblance is crazy,” says Vandermeersch, “even though our story moves over 30 years. Our boys also play with each other in a way that’s still innocent.” But it was actually the two directors, who are married with a young son, who were brought closer together by the film.

A concert pianist and professional chef, she really gets into entertaining. Whether it be a small gathering of friends or the whole family, she thinks a lot about the occasion and the ambiance. Our goal was to create thoughtful, flexible spaces that would provide creative possibilities for any setting. Once your eyes meet the spaces she conjures up, you will be hooked! She’s definitely one of the most popular Charlotte interior designers. Originally founding her interior design firm in 2003 in NYC, she later moved to Charlotte and has never left.

His mother Bea did “1,001 jobs”, including film industry work that helped set him on his course. With a chestnut ponytail and sharp-nosed, slightly gnomish face, the 45-year-old has more nervous energy than his wife, often scrubbing his head with his hands. Family tragedy brings them together again years later and inspires Pietro to begin fulfilling his late father’s (Filippo Timi) dream of building a mountainside cabin, a task for which he chooses to reunite with his old friend to help complete. The project brings them closer together than ever, yet forces both natural and societal exert their pull on the purity of their relationship. And Van Groeningen and Vandermeersch’s patient direction captures both the grandness and granularity of Pietro and Bruno’s story with sweeping scale and sincere emotion.

The Belgian directing duo discuss how how they translated Paolo Coginetti’s novel into cinematic terms, their approach to music, and more.
